Rondel is an entrance mosaic commissioned by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Chicago. Looming over the earth's orb is the cross, anchored in the world, a cosmic sign of Christ's redeeming love. The cross is encircled by the crown of thorns. Both cross and thorns symbolize the sacrifice of Christ's incarnation, suffering and death. The butterfly interrupts the woven thorns as a reminder of Christ's resurrection and affirms God's promise of life eternal. The cross also forms the central trunk and branches of the tree of life, on and around which are depicted other representations of Christian life and service: twelve fruits that suggest a call to discipleship; twelve leaves are arranged like the face of a clock to suggest the passing of time; and three blooming flowers at the tree's base recall the three Lutheran church bodies that were united to form the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. |
