| Generations
is owned by the Fairview Foundation in Edina, Minnesota. It was commissioned
as the basis for various awards used in their extensive donor recognition
program. Shaped from the union of a perfect square and a circle, Generations organizes its space around the basic structure of a spiraling nautilus. It is constructed geometrically by combining increasingly larger arcs of circles within which various design elements begin to emerge as though they are wandering through passing time. At its core, a lifeline pounds out its rhythm with increasing intensity. An earthly form emerges and early pictographic civilizations first adapt, then advance within their environment. Whimsical faces of the sun and moon (is it really made of green cheese?) suggest day and night. A hand of unseen origin carefully measures the earth's parameters with a pair of golden calipers. The molecular structure of a complex carbon atom establishes the hub of a bicycle in motion, the center of Luther's rose and a piece of fruit used for human sustenance. Animated waves await a plunging diver. At water's edge, a teepee connotes the region's ethnic roots. Mechanical gears mark the progress achieved from industrial to nuclear. The fluid motion of a ballet dancer represents the creative endeavors of the arts in action. A child is joyfully uplifted by a parent. A city springs from verdant pastures and a windmill harnesses natural energy to nourish the land and its people. Three trees indicate seasons of growth, ultimately bearing fruit from which new seeds may be sown. And so the cycle of Generations is continued. |
