Jerusalem
Cross
is one of three small panels commissioned by the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America, Chicago, for presentation to world church leaders
including Pope John Paul II in Rome, the Archbishop of Canterbury in
London and the Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople. Presenting the mosaic panel at the Vatican to Pope John Paul II, is the Rev. Lowell G. Almen, Secretary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. |
| Since its inception, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) has used the Jerusalem cross as a symbol of its outreach. Traditionally, it represents Christ's command to proclaim the Gospel to all the world, starting, Christ told his apostles, in Jerusalem. This mosaic panel depicts a large, central cross with a smaller cross in each of its four quadrants. Each small cross has five additional and even smaller crosses within it suggesting the evangelistic mission of the Christian church throughout the world. Green tesserae in the bottom crosses represent the fertile earth and the blue crosses at top indicate the sky. | |
