Tree of Life is a mixed-media work in copper, brass, olivewood (imported from the Holy Land) and Byzantine smalti mosaic. It was commissioned for the chancel of Olivet Lutheran Church in Fargo, North Dakota, and was completed in 2002. Measuring approximately 15 feet by 18 feet, the towering sculpture weighs 1,100 pounds and incorporates about 6,000 copper leaves in two layers to achieve the subtle face of Christ in the canopy of the tree. The trunk is a laminated and carved cruciform with roots appearing to emerge from the negative spaces between the bricks in the wall. |
